Cultivating people in our green spaces
The intention of the Discovery Maze :
The intention is to propose an outdoor Discovery Maze - that will be constructed primarily out of native indigenous plants and greenery.
The purpose of the Discovery Maze :
The purpose of the maze will allow people to team in a group to escape the garden maze taking away knowledge they have gained from learning about indigenous plants and species whilst escaping the maze.
The engagement of the Discovery Maze :
The discovery game will take place in person, however, will be guided through the use of the app inside the maze. To enter the maze one person out of the group will need to scan the QR code to start the app so that everyone in their group can essentially enter. The group will have to unravel facts and clues as to hidden native plants and species inside the maze to get through to the next opening. As easy as it sounds it will be a challenge for many as some of the native greenery may be camouflaged with parts of the maze to make it harder for the group to find. Once the group finds the native species and plants they can then scan a photo of their findings that will come up with a description about the flora or fauna and educate the group about a hidden fact they may not know. As they journey through the maze, groups will continue broaden their minds by changing their understanding and behaviour about opening themselves physically and mentally, in ways they haven’t thought about things before.
What will visitors gain/take away from this Discovery Maze :
The Discovery maze allows visitors to educate themselves and connect with people in their group about hidden native greenery facts. This is a great way of making the visitor experience feel more participative. In total there will be 7 different groups participating with each other to get through the maze, the group that escapes the maze the quickest will get the opportunity of taking a plant seed of their choice home to plant and document it on the app by sharing their plants growth with people on the app with others. People can use #Discovery to post their reward and plant growth globally as it is an activity that is taking place in the heart of Melbourne City.
The core understanding behind this involvement :
The project is about cultivating people in our green spaces through the interaction of a maze with hidden facts about native flora and fauna. The people will have to unravel facts hidden in the maze using a gamified discovery app as an educational tool.
Essentially the maze is contributing to the idea of ‘radical gardening/urban gardening’ by fusing our society, our people and greenery in one. Since our world revolves around technology the app is a way to get the people to move around the space whilst educating them about things they don’t know and essentially getting them out of their comfort zone.
